Built-environment Determinants of Active Travel Behavior of Older Adults in Xiamen, China

Arguably, active travel (AT) is important for aging. Using data from the Travel Survey of Xiamen Residents 2015 and geodata, this study develops a set multilevel regression models to scrutinize effect neighborhood-level built environment on three AT outcomes (daily propensity, frequency, time) older adults aged 60 years or above in Xiamen, China. Its results show that truly shapes behavior adults. Land use mix, intersection density, bus route density have positive association with AT, whereas distance commercial center has negative association. Population no significant mix most built-environment variable. Various robustness checks confirm plausibility key findings. This provides practical implications China’s national strategy “actively addressing population aging.”
